About the Team
We have road and mountain teams with both competitive and recreational riders. MTB racing is in the fall, and starts up right with school, while road racing begins the first weekend of February (Although the team will start training in earnest mid-fall). The team is sponsored by Specialized and we get some phenomenal deals on bikes and equipment through them. Furthermore, team dues cover all travel/lodging/race entry fees.

Fall is fat tire time, and UCSB Cycling is gearing up to compete in another successful mountain bike season, and to host our second annual mountain bike race, the Cowpie Classic. Here are a few tips for new and returning members to help everyone have a fun and successful race season.<
Step One: Get a Physical Mountain bike season starts the first weekend after classes start, but many new racers aren't able to attend the season's first race. Why? Because they haven't gotten a physical yet. To sign up for a club sport, it is required that members have gotten a physical within the last year, and can get their doctor to certify that they're in good physical condition. Since there's so much demand from new and returning students, it's hard to get a physical from Student Health the first few weeks of Fall quarter, so new members should try and get a physical sometime during the summer so they can start racing as soon as the season starts.
Step Two: Get in Shape We have training plans available through our coach for both gravity and endurance riders. Returning members are encouraged to contact coach Ken Hanson directly if they're interested in getting a schedule for summer training. New members are encouraged to contact the appropriate captain (emails are available on the Contact page) about getting a schedule.
Step Three: Get Money Yes, we do have team dues. They're usually around $200, but change each season, and the final amount for the 2009 season will be announced when school starts. While dues will be fully described at our team meetings once school starts, they cover pretty much every expense of a race weekend, including gas, lodging and race fees, as well as coaching for the season. They're a good deal and they're worth saving up for.
Follow these tips and you will be prepared to start racing with the finest mountain bike team in California. The schedule for the upcoming season is below so you can take a look at what races we'll be attending. Every race has at least one endurance and gravity event, so all riders are welcome. Feel free to contact the mountain bike team captains Lisette Arellano, Zasho Donner and Chris Stein with any questions. Their emails are available on our Contact page. We look forward to meeting everyone in the fall!
