About the Team
The UCSB Sailing Team is a student run club with about twenty active members. Any undergraduate student at UCSB is welcome to try out for the team. Practices are held from 2:30 to 5:30 at the Santa Barbara Harbor throughout the school year. Team meetings are held on campus on Tuesday nights from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.
Practices are largely based on racing and related sailing skills, although no racing experience is necessary to join the team. Many of our members learn to race in practice. The team travels to regattas around California and sometimes beyond on weekends. Team members should be actively participating in practices to be eligible to travel. The majority of these regattas offer fleets for accomplished ‘Varsity' competitors through novice ‘JV' competitors.
For anyone who would like a basic class in sailing, UCSB also offers an ESSR class in beginning sailing. These classes are hosted downtown in the same location as the team's practices. These classes are an excellent way to learn the basics before jumping into the racing team. Classes fill up fast, so register early if you want to participate. To get more information, contact the team or the coach via email. You can also come to a team meeting or practice if you like. You can meet some of the team and check out a boat at the Fun and Fitness Festival as well. See the Recreational Sports website for more information on this event. The team has about 30 members at a time and, of which several are past national champions in a variety of fleets. We sail our fleet of 12 collegiate FJs, purchased in 2007. The team has been ranked as high as 12 in the coaches poll, and has qualified for several national championship events in the past ten years. We encourage anyone with interest to come to a practice and try it out. If you want to begin with a basic class, we recommend the Leisure Review sailing classes offered by the ESSR department. An SBCC sailing team is being formed and those students will follow the same schedule as the UCSB team for practices and regattas. Interested students should contact the coach by emailing the team.
