About the Team

The UCSB Waterski and Wakeboard is a sport club that competes in NCWSA collegiate waterski tournaments. In the 3-event tournaments collegiate skiers compete in slalom, trick/wakeboarding, and jump.The tournaments are held all over California in the fall and the spring, and there are usually 4-5 tournaments per season. At regional tournaments, we compete against schools such as ASU, Cal Poly, UCLA, Western Washinton University, USC, UC Davis, Chico State, Sacramento State, and more. If we qualify for nationals we compete against schools from all over the country. If any of our individual skiers qualify for All Stars, they represent the Western Region in competing against other region's athletes.

Beyond tournaments, the team also puts on fun events all year such as Alumni Weekend in the fall, a 3 day houseboat trip to Lake Berryessa over Spring Break, and Parent's Weekend in the spring.

The team meets every week at 8pm in Girvetz Hall, room 2129. If you have any interest at all be sure to make it to a meeting and check us out!

Experience

Most of our competitors had never competed at the tournament level until college. The majority of the team grew up skiing recreationally with either their parents or their friends. If you have previous experience on a slalom course, jump ramp, or in any kind of tournament setting you are FAR ahead of the game. But remember, no experience is necessay!

Practice

The team currently practices behind a 2010 Malibu Response LXI with a wakeboard tower. Practices are held on free weekends and occasionally during the week at one of two practice venues. Two and a half hours away is Lake Nacimiento in Paso Robles is a large lake that has a slalom course and is great for running wakeboard practice. We also belong to a private lake in Lemoore called Sunrise Ski Ranch that is about three and half hours away. This lake is not as ideal for wakeboarding as it is short and narrow, but it is excellent for slalom skiing, as the water is always flat and the course is well maintained. At practice, members have the option of riding whatever they want when it is their turn behind the boat. All expenses including travel gas and boat gas are included in team dues.

The primary goal of our team is to have fun competing at waterskiing and wakeboarding. We love to ski and we always have a great time wherever we go. UCSB has a reputation as being the most fun collegiate team in the region, and we take pride in our laid-back competing atmosphere. We meet every Tuesday night at 8pm in Girvetz Hall, room 2129.
