Description of Sport Club:

UCSB Rowing is one of the fastest club rowing programs in the country. Rowers from UCSB have medalled at national championship regattas and some have even gone on to the Olympics. No previous rowing experience is necessary. In fact, our most successful athletes have excelled in other sports like swimming, soccer, and cross country in high school. The rowing team is made up two squads for men and women: Novice and Varsity. Novice athletes are first-year rowers while varsity athletes have competed at least one year in college. Most practices in the fall for novice rowers will be ON CAMPUS in the AFTERNOON. Despite what you may have heard, rowing practice is NOT at 5 AM!

  • UC Santa Barbara Crew - Established 1964
  • 2008 Women's Varsity 8 - ACRA National Championships Bronze Medalists
  • 2008 Men's Varsity 4 -- Dad Vail Championships Bronze Medalists

UCSB Crew is a sport club, distinguished by professional leadership and coaching, which offers students the opportunity to explore and expand their capabilities by participating in a competitive sport as representatives of their University. Participation in competitive college sports builds character by developing values of teamwork, commitment, self-sacrifice, discipline, and achievement and reinforces the university's core values of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship while providing students with a healthy balance to their academic pursuits.

Mike rowed at Purdue University from 1992-1996 and remained in the program as a graduate assistant while obtaining a master's degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. After Purdue, Mike coached the men's competitive program at the Minneapolis Rowing Club where the team won the league championship in 1998. After a season at MRC, Mike returned to collegiate coaching at Lafayette College in Easton, PA before coming to UCSB in 2002. While here, the team has remained competitive on the West Coast and regularly attended the Dad Vail Regatta. Since 2002 the women's crews have won two medals in lightweight events at Dad Vail and have twice finished in the top 10 in the varsity 8. His frosh 8 in 2003 was the first in club history to compete at IRA's and finished in 9th place, defeating several nationally prominent crews along the way. In 2004 Davis won the novice 8 at WIRA for the first time since 1999.
